Although Valentine’s Day is named after Saint Valentine, it has grown to be so much more than a festival celebrating a martyr. A day (or days, or weeks) of love are celebrated all around the world in many different ways and at different times of the year, but all of these festivities have something in common: showing your love for your partner by sharing gifts.

How can we make this year better than the last? Let’s take a look at some of the love-ly traditions from around the world for some inspiration!

France. It’s said that Valentine’s Day began in France in the 1400’s… makes sense, since France is considered to be one of the most romantic countries. Couples exchange cards to celebrate the day. On a more dramatic note, in the past, there was a “love lottery”, and those left couple-less by the end would build a bonfire and curse the opposite sex. (It got so rowdy that this tradition was actually banned!)

Japan. In Japan, there are two equivalents for Valentine’s Day: on February 14, females give gifts to their partners, while on March 14, males give the gifts (“white day”). Then, on April 14, it’s the singles’ turn!... to eat black bean paste noodles (“black day”).

Argentina. A week of sweetness is the Argentine equivalent of Valentine’s Day. Couples exchange gifts

Ghana. February 14 marks National Chocolate Day in Ghana. There’s nothing sweeter than chocolate (metaphorically speaking)!

England. In England, on Valentine’s Day eve, women place five bay leaves on their pillows in hopes of dreaming about their future husbands. Spicy!

United States. In addition to the traditional couples’ Valentine’s Day, full of food and gift-giving and romance, the United States is a site for “Galentine’s” Day (which was, oddly enough, started by a TV show), when people celebrate their friendships.
